The Architecture of Internal Bliss: Why We’ve Been Spelling Happiness Wrong
Welcome to this week’s newsletter, where we dive into a perspective-shifting approach to mental well-being inspired by the book "100 Happpiness Tricks." Most of us spend our lives chasing a version of joy that feels like a moving target, but the core philosophy here is that happiness is not a destination or a result of external success; it is a state of being and a deliberate choice we make every single day.
One of the most immediate "tricks" is a simple spelling change: Happpiness with 3 Ps. The author argues that the traditional spelling only accounts for Pleasure, which is often fleeting and follows a "Hedonic Treadmill" where we return to our baseline dissatisfaction shortly after buying a new gadget or achieving a goal. To find Eternal Bliss, we must incorporate the other two Ps: Peace and Purpose. Peace serves as the foundation, providing freedom from the chaos of the mind, while Purpose liberates us from misery by answering the deeper questions of why we are here.
The newsletter today focuses on how we can transition from "wanting" to be happy to simply "being" happpy. The first step is to eliminate "I want to be happy" from your vocabulary. Instead, start your morning by reciting a simple vow: "I choose to be happpy today," regardless of the weather or what others may say. This mental shift is supported by the GAS formula—Gratitude, Acceptance, and Surrender. By being grateful for being alive, accepting circumstances without protest, and surrendering to the flow of life, we fill our "life-tank" with positive fuel.

To make this practical, the book suggests creating a "Happpiness Card". This is a list of ten simple triggers that cost nothing but bring instant joy, such as a hot cup of coffee, watching a sunset, or playing with a pet. Once you have your list, the trick is to "pull the trigger" whenever you feel stress creeping in. Conversely, we must identify and eliminate "joy stealers"—the toxic thoughts, stressful meetings, or even people that drain our energy. Sometimes, a joy stealer is as simple as a tight shoe; other times, it’s a "monkey mind" that won't stop jumping between past regrets and future fears.
Understanding the nature of the mind is crucial for maintaining this state. The author defines the MIND as Misery, Ignorance, Negativity, and Desire. Our thoughts often oscillate between a past that is gone (history) and a future that isn't born (mystery), causing us to miss the "pastry" of the present moment. To counter this, we can live in "day-tight compartments," sealing off yesterday’s guilt and tomorrow’s anxiety to focus entirely on the present minute. As the book reminds us, "Why worry? Enjoy your curry!". By stilling the mind through silence or meditation, we can flip from a state of mental noise to a state of Consciousness, where we use our intellect to choose our mood rather than letting circumstances dictate it.
We also need to redefine our relationship with success. Many people believe success leads to happiness, but the reality is that Happpiness is Success. If you are peaceful and joyful, you have already won. Rushing through life as if it’s a race only leads to burnout; instead, we should "slow down the pace and live with grace". This includes moving from a mindset of greed to one of contentment, realizing that we don't need to be millionaires to be "Smile Zillionaires".
Finally, the ultimate trick is discovering your Purpose and living as the Divine Soul. When we understand that life is a Drama and not a Trauma, we can view our challenges through the lens of Karma, accepting that everything unfolding is part of a larger Divine show. By realizing we are not the body or the mind, but a "Spark Of Unique Life" (SOUL), we reach a state of SatChitAnanda—Truth-Consciousness-Bliss.
This week, I challenge you to make your own Happiness Card and choose to be happpy, moment by moment. Remember, happiness is within you; don't wander looking for it elsewhere. I hope this newsletter helps you find your "Internal Bliss" today!
